We started Acumen because good solid-wood furniture was hard to find in the size you actually need. So we make it to your measurements, in our own workshop, and finish it by hand.
Our story
From a small Cumbrian workshop to thousands of homes
Acumen started in 2018 with a handful of rustic stools and an obsession with making furniture differently.
I wanted to create pieces that felt substantial, individual and built for real homes — not furniture dictated by a handful of standard sizes on a production line.
What started small quickly grew. Customers wanted dining tables made longer, wider, thicker, in different finishes and with different leg styles. So instead of asking people to compromise, we built the business around choice.
Today, our team manufactures dining, living and home-office furniture here in Cumbria, combining solid timber, traditional craftsmanship and modern manufacturing.

How it's made
From your measurements to your home
Every piece in our handmade range is made to order. Nothing sits in a warehouse waiting for a buyer: it's cut, welded and finished once you've told us exactly what you want.

1You design it
Size to the centimetre, seven wax finishes, five frame styles. If you need something bespoke, our team will talk it through with you.

2We cut and weld
FSC certified kiln-dried Scandinavian redwood, cut to your size. Steel frames welded by hand in our workshop.

3Finished by hand
Two generous coats of Fiddes Supreme Wax, worked into the grain by our finishing team.

4Delivered to you
Free delivery to mainland UK, including Saturdays.

Our materials
Simple materials, chosen to last
Scandinavian redwood
FSC certified kiln-dried Scandinavian redwood, rough-sawn for texture so each wax finish settles into the grain with two tones.
Reclaimed elm
Characterful reclaimed timber that's denser and stronger than pine, finished in wax polish or hard wax oil.
Oak, ash & walnut
Live-edge and tree tables, each one a single piece you won't see anywhere else.

Why the names
Named after the Lakes
Our tables take their names from the Lake District around the workshop: the fells of Helvellyn, Blencathra and Grasmoor, the Grisedale valley and the village of Glenridding.
