How do I get my £2 sample cost refunded?

When you place a dining table order (Blencathra, Grasmoor, Grisedale, Glenridding, Helvellyn or Urban — pine or elm), quote your sample order number in the checkout notes. Our team refunds the £2 to your original payment method within 3–5 working days. The refund applies to dining table orders only, not benches or other categories.

What’s the difference between the pine sample and the elm sample?

Pine is a warm-toned softwood (FSC certified kiln-dried Scandinavian redwood) with distinctive round dark knots. Elm is a hardwood — denser, stronger, with fine tight grain and subtle pin knots. The seven Fiddes wax finishes take differently on each: warmer and more even on pine, richer in the grain lines on elm. If you’re deciding between the two, order both.

What’s the difference between Rustic Weathered and Modern Planed?

Rustic Weathered keeps the surface texture from the original planing — subtle saw marks across the face that catch the wax and give the top character. Modern Planed removes them for a smoother, more refined finish. The seven wax colours are identical on both.

Will the wax look exactly the same on my dining table?

Yes — the same Fiddes wax, the same two-coat hand-buffed technique, applied by the same finishing team. Sample cards are cut from the same slab library as our tables. Natural timber varies board to board (the character you can see on your sample varies across the length of your table).

How quickly will my samples arrive?

Samples are made to order every Tuesday and shipped every Wednesday for Thursday delivery via FedEx Next Day. Free UK mainland shipping. International orders are quoted separately.

Can I order more than one sample set?

Yes. Use the quantity selector to order multiple sets — useful if you’re comparing pine and elm side by side or want to show family. If you go on to order a dining table, we refund the cost of all sample sets on that order.

Rustic Pine — FSC Certified Kiln-Dried Scandinavian Redwood

Warm honey tone with distinctive round dark knots. Available in two surface treatments:

  • Rustic Weathered — the sweep of arced Swedish saw marks is kept across the face, giving each wax finish a two-tone effect where the wax settles differently in the coarser grain.
  • Modern Planed — the saw marks are milled away for a smoother, more refined finish. The wax settles evenly for a cleaner tone.

Reclaimed Elm — Dense Hardwood, Aged Character

Genuine hardwood — denser and stronger than pine, with fine straight grain, subtle pin knots and the aged character of decades-old boards. Elm takes wax differently to pine: the finish lifts subtly, richer in the harder grain lines, softer in the lighter bands. If you were drawn to our dining tables but concerned about a softwood, elm is the answer.

  • Rustic Weathered — surface texture kept; the wax picks up the character of each board.
  • Modern Planed — surface smoothed; the wax settles evenly for a refined finish.

"I ordered the grisedale table and bench in grey wash hard oil , the samples don’t the items justice. The table and bench are excellent quality very sturdy and beautifully finished . Customer service was excellent throughout our only complaint as such was the building of it the instructions/no Allen key provided either . My husband managed it but some may find it difficult to do . But as I say the table is fantastic we love it"
